Course Goals: It is the intent of this course to introduce
you to the numerical methods that are commonly needed in
root finding, solving systems of linear equations, interpolation,
numerical differentiation and numerical integration.
The mathematical underpinnings of these
methods are emphasized as much as their algorithmic aspects,
since numerical analysis requires both a theoretical
knowledge of the subject and computational experience with it.
Textbook: Numerical Methods for Mathematics, Science, and
Engineering by John H. Mathews
Course Content: Chapter 1,2,3,4,5,6, and 7. See the tentative
course outline for details.
Grading: It is based on homework assignments, MatLab projects,
two hour exams, and a comprehensive final exam.
- Homework and Projects: 40% of the final course grade. It will be
assigned and collected. The homework assignments are designed
to let you practise with the numerical methods and analysis
discussed in the class with their applications.
The MatLab projects are designed to ask you to solve
problems using the numerical methods in MatLab.
I truly believe that doing homework and project are
very important tools in learning process. You are encouraged to work
on the homework assignments and projects in pairs
and to discuss any problem with me and your classmates, but are not allowed
to copy others' work.
- Hour exams: 40% of the final course grade. Two one hour
exams are tentatively scheduled for October 4 and
November 17, respectively. It will be
reannounced a week before each exam. Each exam covers the material
that has been discussed in the class since last exam. Exams are designed to
test your understanding of definitions, derivations of algorithms and
skills of problem solving with these algorithms. You are allowed to bring
note cards of any size with definitions, algorithms and theorems.
- Final exam: 20% of the final course grade. The final exam will
be comprehensive and similar to hour exams.
The mathematical software MatLab will be an important and
useful tool for this course. Handouts and tutorials on MatLab:
Programming in
MatLab is very easy to learn and you
will appreciate its simplicity and usefulness.
The software is installed under CITNOV1 Programs and the
DEC Server macs01. A copy of the Users'
Guide is placed in DEC LAB (CA 210).
Please let me know whenever you need any assistance.
Office Hours: 11:00am-12:00pm MWF and
2:00pm-3:00pm TR or by appointment at any time.
I will be working in Math Lab (CA207) at 7-9:30pm on Tuesday.
