Course Goals and Expectations:
Students are expected to be able to
solve systems of linear equations, to calculate determinants,
to compute inverses and to find eigenvalues and eigenvectors of matrices.
Students are also expected to understand the concepts of vector
space, subspace, basis, transformation and quadratic form.
Textbook: Linear Algebra with Applications the
5th edition by Steven J. Leon
Course Content: Sections 1.1-1.5, 2.1-2.2, 3.1-3.6, 4.1-4.3,
5.1-5.6, 6.1, 6.3, 6.5. See the tentative
course outline for details.
Grading: It is based on homework assignments, MatLab projects,
three hour exams, and a comprehensive final exam.
- Homework and Projects:
- Homework: 20% of the final course grade. Problems will be
assigned along the lecture and will be collected weekly.
Handed in homework is required to be a piece of fine work.
in the sense that it clearly states the problems, your approaches,
and final results. Scratch work is NOT acceptable.
- Project: 10% of the final course grade. These projects are
designed to let you solve problems and applications in linear
algebra using MatLab. Detailed instructions and examples on how
to use MatLab will be posted on the web page under MatLab Handouts.
- Hour exams: 45% of the final course grade. Three one hour
exams are tentatively scheduled for February 11, March 11
and April 15, respectively. It will be reannounced a week
before each exam. Each exam covers the material that has gone over in
the class since last exam.
- Final exam: 25% of the final course grade. The final exam will
be comprehensive.
The mathematical software MatLab will be an important and
useful tool for this course. Here are handouts and tutorials on
MatLab:
MatLab is very easy to learn and you
will appreciate its simplicity and usefulness.
The software is installed under CITNOV1 Programs and the
DEC Server macs02. A copy of the Users'
Guide is placed in DEC LAB (CA 210).
Please let me know whenever you need any assistance.
Office Hours: 9:00am-9:50am MTWF,
2:00pm-3:00pm M and
2:00pm-4:00pm W or by appointment at any time.
I will be working in Math Lab (CA207) during 7-9:30pm on Tuesday.
