Course Goals:
This is an integrated course in linear algebra
and differential equations.
Concerning linear algebra, the student is expected to be able to
solve systems of linear equations, to evaluate determinants, to compute
inverses and to find eigenvalues and eigenvectors of matrices.
The student is also expected to understand the concepts of vector
space, subspace and basis.
Regarding differential equations, the student is expected to recognize
which procedure is appropriate to solve a given differential equation,
and to carry out correctly the procedure to find the solution. Some
applications will be studied and the student is expected to be able to
set up the mathematical model, a differential equation or a system
of differential equations, for a given application and then solve the
problem.
Textbook: Advanced Engineering Mathematics, the 7th Edition
by Erwin Kreyszig.
Course Content: Linear Algebra - Chapter 7. Differential
Equations - Chapter 1,2,3,4 and 6. See
course outline for details.
Grading:
It is based on homework assignments,
assigned MatLab projects,
four hour exams and a comprehensive final exam.
- Homework and projects: 25% of the final course grade.
- Homework -
Exercises will be
assigned for each covered topic and will be collected for grading.
The handed-in homework is required to be a piece of
fine work in the sense that it clearly states the problems,
your approaches, and final results.
Policy for the late homework: Any homework handed
in after the due day without an acceptable reason will be checked,
but will not be given any credit.
- Project -
MatLab projects are designed to let you solve
problems in linear algebra
and differential equations using MatLab.
Detailed instructions and examples on how
to use MatLab will be posted on this web page under
MatLab Handouts.
If any two of you like to work on the projects as a team, please do so
and turn in one copy of the report for each project with two names on it
and both will receive the same grade for the project.
- Hour exams: 50% of the final course grade. Four (4) one hour
exams are tentatively scheduled for
February 3, February 24,
March 17 and April 14,
respectively. It will be
reannounced a week before each exam. Each exam covers the material
that has been gone over in the class since the previous hour exam.
- Final exam: 25% of the final course grade. The final exam will
be comprehensive.
Office Hours: 9:00am-9:50am MTWF,
2:00pm-3:00pm M and
2:00pm-4:00pm W or by appointment at any time.
I will be working in Math Lab (CA207) at 7-9:30pm on Tuesday.

The mathematical software MatLab will be an important and
useful tool for this course. Handouts and tutorials on
MatLab:
Programming in
MatLab is very easy to learn and you
will appreciate its simplicity and usefulness.
The software is installed under CITNOV1 Programs.
Please let me know whenever you need any assistance.
