Welcome!
Textbook: Algebra and Trigonometry
by Larson and Hostetler, the 4th Edition
Goals:
The goal of the course is to provide students majoring in
mathematics, mathematics education, computer science, engineering or
sciences with a thorough mathematical background in preparation for
the calculus sequence and mathematics courses beyond.
Students will be expected to demonstrate the following:
- Basic skills in algebra and trigonometry.
- The ability to complete somewhat sophisticated algebra and trigonometry
assignments.
- A basic capability in problem solving.
The basic skills in algebra, trigonometry and problem solving
will be tested through five hour exams.
Grading Policy
The final grade for the course is based on collected homework, quizzes,
five hour exams and a comprehensive final exam.
- Homework - 10% of the final course grade. Exercises will be
assigned at the end of each lecture and some of them will be
collected for grading.
- Quizzes - 5% of the final course grade. One to two 10 minutes
quizzes will be given between every two consecutive hour exams. Each
quiz and topics will be announced at least one day earlier before it
is given.
- Hour exams - 60% of the final course grade. Five (5) one-hour
exams are tentatively scheduled for
September 17, October 6, October 22, November 10 and
December 3, respectively.
It will be re-announced a week before each exam.
- Final exam - 25% of the final course grade. The final exam will
be comprehensive.
Behavior Policy
- Class Attendance Policy:
The attendance policies implemented school-wide will be observed in
this class. Absences and lates will be
reported weekly as required by the college.
If you know you will miss a class due to special orders, guard
duties or illness, please let me know so that I can help you make up
your missed work.
- Sleeping in Classes:
According to the white book, I will report as absent cadets who sleep
in class after having been warned not to do so.
- Food and Drinks:
Eating and drinking are not allowed in the classroom during class periods.
ESP Study Sessions
During the ESP on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday,
Professor Chen will be in Room 203 of Capers Hall to assist you with
any problem you have in Precalculus. If the room is not available
for some nights, please follow the instructions given on the wall
by the door to go to another classroom (usually on the same floor).
