·         There are three types of graded work in this class: checkpoint exercises, labs and tests.

·         All assignments will be submitted electronically via WebCT, per instructions below, by the end of class on the due date.

·         You also log in to WebCT to see your grades and track your progress.

·         If you find a problem with your grade, it is your responsibility to contact the instructor to get it corrected.

·         Late assignments will not be accepted—WebCT is set up to lock you out if you attempt to submit an assignment after the due date and time.

·         Labs and checkpoints may be submitted early (I strongly encourage this!)

·         Tests must be taken in class (in the lab) on the posted date, via WebCT.

·         All tests, including the Final, are open-book.

·         Good students will review the labs and checkpoints material before coming to class.

Labs

Files needed to do your lab assignments can be found at http://macs.citadel.edu/cs110
Labs are from the MS Office 2003 text. Each lab represents solving a particular problem within a particular context using particular tools.

·         To receive an "A" on a lab, you must:

o       Correctly complete all the steps.

o       Only minor errors, if any, exist.

o       It is clear you did the work and know how to use the tool.

·         Labs that are incomplete, or have one or more significant problems, will result in grades other than "A".

Web-based Checkpoints

These are web-based assignments from the Discovering Computer 2006 text. Do ONLY the following 4 exercises for each checkpoint:

  1. TRUE/FALSE,
  2. Multiple-Choice,
  3. Matching Exercises,
  4. Computer Genius.

·         Mastery of a checkpoint (“A”-level work) means that you have a score of 80% or better on each of the 4 components (not the average of all four) for a given chapter.

·         You may repeat any exercise as many times as needed, in order to achieve a grade you are happy with, up to the end of class on the due date.

·         Significant deviations from the 80% mark will result in a grade of "B", or lower.

Electronic Submission of Checkpoints & Labs

The labs and checkpoints instruct you to print various pages upon completing certain points in each assignment.
PRINTED PAGES WILL NOT BE GRADED!!!!! You must submit your assignments electronically as instructed in class.
Instructions for doing this are given below. They will also be demonstrated in class.

For checkpoints:

1.      Open an MSWord document.

2.      Insert your cover page information at the top of the first page.

3.      Complete one of the exercises (such as matching, etc.)

4.      Take a snapshot of the results window using alt-printscreen, INSTEAD of printing it.

5.      Paste the snapshot picture into the Word document.

6.      Crop the picture in MSWord so that it doesn't take up so much space.
If you crop correctly, you can get all four pictures on one page, and it will still be readable.

7.      Move the cursor past the picture you just pasted.

8.      Repeat steps 4-8 for each required exercise.

9.      Save your document (you should have only one document per assignment, not per exercise!)

10.    Submit it to your instructor via WebCT.

For Labs:

  1. Complete each lab as directed.
  2. When asked to print something, save a separate copy of the file instead.
  3. When told explicitly to save a file in the instructions, save as directed.
  4. After completing the lab, zip your lab files into a single zipped archive file, and submit the ZIP file
    to your instructor via WebCT.

To zip a file on the machines in the 220 lab:

  1. After completing a checkpoint or lab, zip any files into a single zipped archive file.
    1. Right click on one of the files you want to save.
    2. Choose the "Send To" option on the popup menu, and send it to "Compressed Folder".
This will create a zipped "folder" that is really a zipped file containing the file you selected
in the same location as the document you selected.
    3. Drag any additional files you want to submit into this newly created zipped folder.
    4. When you select a file to submit for your assignment, select the zipped folder.
  2. For labs, add your cover page information to the "Comment" section of the archive
    1. Right-click on the zipped folder and choose "properties".
    2. Click on the Summary tab of the dialog box that pops up.
    3. Enter your cover sheet information in the "Comment" text box.
    4. Press "OK" and close the dialog
  3. The resulting zip file is what you will submit to your instructor.

Notes:

·         It is not necessary to zip/compress checkpoint files.

·         Failure to follow the instructions above (such as cropping), will result in a “B” grade, regardless of your score.

"Cover Page" Information
This information identifies you to your instructor. Assignments that do not include the required information will not be graded. Make it easy on your instructor to grade your work! A "Cover Page" must include all of the following information:
