Best Frequent Marathoners 2013

This continues an effort I began in 2009 of trying to identify what I call the best frequent marathoners; those runners who a) run a lot of marathons, and b) do so reasonably well.

I measure performance by calculating the difference between the time a runner achieves in a marathon and the median time for that sex in that marathon. For example, I ran the Casper Marathon in 4:20:00, the median for men was 4:25:58. Thus I achieved a score of 5:58. I do not give negative scores, if a runner has a time slower than the sex median the runner is given 0.

Here is a detailed example involving another, somewhat faster, South Carolinian, Christine Rockey. The first column gives the name of the race, the next three columns give her time in hours, minutes, seconds, the fifth column gives her time in seconds, the sixth column gives the female median in seconds for that marathon, and the seventh column gives her score for the race.

Her total is 39.966.5 seconds, or 11:06:06.5 in standard hours, minutes, seconds notation.

I only include marathons in the United States. It is hard enough to keep track of these without considering results from elsewhere. I rely heavily on marathonguide.com, since they have sex-differentiated results, and allow easy searching for a particular runner. I usually check the race website for results, and will go with those if they differ from marathonguide.com. (There is a slight difference between the race website and marathonguide.com for Casper results, for example.) I do not consider ultramarathons.

I welcome any information or comments you may have. I do not run with these people (no pun intended) so I am not always aware of the candidates for this list. (A week ago I had never heard of Sophia Shi; another runner sent me her name.) Please let me know of any runners you think might make the list. If you know of a marathon within the U.S. which is not listed at marathonguide.com and which has published, sex-differentiated results, please let me know. If you think my calculations for you are in error, please let me know. Finally, please let me know of runners using different names, such as Chuck M J Engle and Melissa Missy Peters.

So here are the women who accumulated 10.5 or more hours in 2013, and the men who accumulated 13 or more hours in 2013.

Here are results from previous years. I apologize for the crappy look of some of these. My department changed servers several times during 2013 and pages which looked good on earlier servers look like crap on the one we now use.
